Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is placing a strong emphasis on transport infrastructure and connectivity as part of efforts to improve the welfare of transport workers and enhance economic productivity across the country.
Shettima made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during the inauguration of the National Working Committee of the National Structure of Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027, a political support group campaigning for the President’s re-election.
Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, the Vice President described transport operators as vital contributors to Nigeria’s economic development, noting that they play a key role in connecting communities, moving goods and facilitating access to markets and essential services.
According to him, the federal government regards transport connectivity as a critical economic requirement and is investing in major infrastructure projects aimed at improving mobility and reducing operational bottlenecks.
He said ongoing investments in highways, rail networks, ports, logistics facilities and clean mobility initiatives are designed to strengthen national productivity and ease the movement of people and goods across the country.
Shettima also noted that transport workers are uniquely positioned to assess the impact of government policies because of their daily interactions with citizens in different parts of Nigeria.
The Vice President recalled that transport-sector stakeholders joined the administration’s support base in June 2026 and praised the group for rapidly building a nationwide structure that includes road transport workers, railway personnel, aviation operators, maritime stakeholders, inland waterways practitioners, logistics providers and pipeline transportation workers.
While commending the group’s organisational efforts, he urged its members to conduct their political activities peacefully and focus on issues ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shettima warned against violence, intimidation, misinformation and other forms of electoral misconduct, stressing that political participation should strengthen democratic institutions and promote national unity.
“Keep your engagements peaceful and your message issue-based,” he advised, adding that Nigeria’s future should be determined through open debate and credible electoral processes.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027, Prince Segun Obayendo, said the group’s support for the President was based on what he described as significant reforms and investments in the transport and logistics sector.
Obayendo, who also serves as the President’s Technical Adviser on Transportation, Logistics and Innovation, said the inauguration of the committee was intended to consolidate the organisation’s nationwide presence and mobilise stakeholders in support of Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He expressed confidence that the transport sector would play a crucial role in rallying support for the administration ahead of the 2027 polls.
Also speaking at the event, the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Emeka Okafor, praised the group for its commitment to the President and called on members to leverage their extensive networks to mobilise support for Tinubu and other APC candidates in future elections.
The inauguration marks the latest effort by pro-Tinubu groups to strengthen grassroots mobilisation as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
