Ten Years After Title Fairytale, Leicester Relegated to League One

Leicester City have been relegated to the third tier of English football following a 2-2 draw against Hull City, sealing a second consecutive demotion just a decade after their historic Premier League title triumph.

The result leaves Leicester 23rd on the Championship table with 42 points from 44 matches, seven points adrift of safety with only two games remaining, making survival mathematically impossible. Hull, still in contention for promotion, twice fought back to secure a valuable point at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester’s struggles were evident early in the match when Hull took the lead in the 18th minute after Liam Miller capitalised on a costly error by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. The hosts responded after the break, with Jordan James converting a penalty in the 52nd minute before Luke Thomas briefly put Leicester ahead just two minutes later. However, Hull restored parity in the 63rd minute through Oli McBurnie, ensuring the match ended in a draw that confirmed Leicester’s fate.

The relegation marks a remarkable fall for a club that shocked the football world in the 2015–16 season by winning the Premier League title as 5,000-1 outsiders under manager Claudio Ranieri. Leicester also secured the FA Cup in 2021, further cementing one of the most memorable eras in the club’s history.

However, recent seasons have been marked by instability and off-field challenges. The club’s situation worsened this campaign after a six-point deduction for breaching English Football League financial regulations, compounding a series of disappointing performances, including defeats to Swansea City and Portsmouth.

The drop to League One underscores a rapid and dramatic decline, raising serious questions about the club’s long-term direction and management. For Leicester supporters, the latest setback represents a stark contrast to the heights of a decade ago, as the club now faces the difficult task of rebuilding from the third tier.
