The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Muslims across the country to look out for the new crescent moon of Jumadal Ula 1448 AH on Sunday, October 11.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, October 11 corresponds to the 29th day of Rabi’us Thani 1448 AH and has been designated for the nationwide moon-sighting exercise.
The Sultan encouraged Muslims to observe the western horizon after sunset and report any sighting of the crescent moon through recognised traditional leadership channels.
Persons who successfully sight the moon were directed to report their observations to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultanate Council.
The moon-sighting exercise forms part of the Islamic tradition used to determine the beginning of lunar months and key religious observances.
The Sultan also called on Islamic scholars, traditional rulers and community leaders to support a transparent and orderly verification process.
He urged Muslims to await official announcements from relevant authorities regarding the commencement of Jumadal Ula 1448 AH.
