Shettima Tasks LG Chairmen to Drive Nutrition 774 Initiative at Grassroots

Vice President Kashim Shettima has charged local government chairmen across the country to take the lead in implementing the Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative at the grassroots to improve nutritional outcomes in communities nationwide.

Shettima also directed the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to strengthen the activities of Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition, describing them as critical platforms for planning, coordination, implementation and accountability at the local level.

The Vice President gave the directive on Friday while receiving members of the National Executive Committee of ALGON on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said the Federal Government was committed to building functional governance structures that would deliver measurable improvements in nutrition across all 774 local government areas.

According to him, strengthening the Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition presents an important opportunity to reinforce the country’s nutrition governance framework.

“I believe that strengthening the Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition presents an important opportunity to reinforce this governance framework. These committees should become centres of planning, coordination, implementation and accountability within every Local Government Area,” Shettima said.

He urged ALGON to provide leadership in driving the initiative, ensuring that every local government establishes effective structures capable of addressing nutrition challenges at the community level.

“I urge ALGON to drive this process with determination so that every council develops functional structures capable of delivering measurable improvements in nutrition at the community level,” the Vice President added.

The Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative is aimed at strengthening nutrition governance at the grassroots by mobilising local governments to improve food and nutrition outcomes through coordinated planning, implementation and community-based interventions.
