Tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams are set to reunite on the Wimbledon courts after receiving a doubles wild card for this year’s tournament.
The All England Club announced on Tuesday that the iconic sisters have been awarded entry into the doubles draw at the grass-court Grand Slam, which begins on June 29.
The news comes shortly after Serena Williams, 44, made a surprise return to competitive tennis following nearly four years away from the professional circuit. Venus, who turns 46 on Wednesday, has continued to compete on a limited schedule in recent years.
The Williams sisters are one of the most successful doubles teams in tennis history, having won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together. Their achievements include six Wimbledon crowns, with their first title at the tournament coming in 2000 and their most recent triumph in 2016. Notably, their first two Wimbledon doubles titles in 2000 and 2002 were secured after entering the tournament as wild cards.
The pair last competed together at the 2022 US Open, where they exited in the opening round. That appearance marked their first doubles partnership in more than four years.
Serena recently returned to action at Queen’s Club in London, where she partnered Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko. The duo won their opening match before withdrawing from the tournament after Mboko suffered a knee injury during singles play. Serena was also scheduled to team up with Karolína Muchová at the Berlin Open.
Singles Wild Card Spots Still Open
Speculation continues over whether Serena could also compete in the singles draw at Wimbledon. One of the eight women’s singles wild card positions remains unassigned, fueling hopes of a possible singles comeback.
Among the women already awarded singles wild cards are recent French Open finalist Maja Chwalińska and six British players: Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan and Mimi Xu.
Wawrinka, Dimitrov and Kyrgios Among Men’s Wild Cards
In the men’s draw, former Grand Slam champions Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov have received singles wild cards alongside British players Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Fery, Jack Pinnington Jones and Toby Samuel.
Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam winner, is expected to retire at the end of the season. His best Wimbledon performances came with quarterfinal appearances on two occasions.
Dimitrov, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking exit last year. The Bulgarian was leading eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets in their fourth-round match before a pectoral injury forced him to retire.
Two men’s singles wild card spots are still to be announced.
In doubles, a wild card has also been awarded to the partnership of Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon singles final in 2022.
Former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini was not included among the initial wild card selections, although he could still gain direct entry into the main draw if withdrawals occur before the tournament begins.
Wimbledon 2026 gets underway on June 29, with fans now eagerly anticipating the return of one of the sport’s most celebrated doubles partnerships
