Senate Receives Petition Over Demolition of Properties Linked to Former Kogi Land Official

The Senate has received a petition seeking legislative intervention over the demolition of properties belonging to the family of a former Director-General of the Kogi State Bureau of Lands, Alhaji Abdulmalik Teina, in the Idoji area of Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The petition was submitted to Senate President Godswill Akpabio through Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, and was filed by Abuja-based legal practitioner Femi Motojesi on behalf of Hajia Zainab Abdulmalik.

The petitioners contended that the affected properties were lawfully acquired and developed through government allocations and subsequent transfers supported by documentation, and questioned whether due process was observed before the demolition was carried out on January 15, 2026. They said the facilities had been used for religious and educational activities by members of an Islamic organisation operating within Kogi Central and that the demolition was executed without adequate notice to the owners.

Among the reliefs sought are an inquiry into the demolition, measures to safeguard the constitutional right to own property, consideration of compensation or restoration where appropriate, and an examination of all relevant documents and official actions to establish whether due process was followed.

The Kogi State Government had not publicly responded to the petition at the time of filing. The matter is expected to come before the Senate in the coming weeks as lawmakers consider the submissions and determine the appropriate course of action.
