A Russian airstrike on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia has killed one person and injured at least 31 others after warplanes dropped eight glide bombs on residential areas within 90 minutes, Ukrainian authorities said.
Zaporizhzhia Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said the Sunday evening bombardment claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman and left dozens injured, including a 16-year-old girl. The attack also damaged 22 apartment buildings across four districts of the city.
Russia has increasingly relied on glide bombs in its war against Ukraine. The Soviet-era weapons, fitted with modern guidance systems, can carry up to 3,000 kilograms of explosives and have been used extensively to target Ukrainian towns and cities. Ukrainian officials say they currently lack effective means of intercepting the bombs.
Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal to international allies for additional U.S.-made Patriot air defence systems, stressing that they remain the only reliable defence against Russian ballistic missiles.
“The world has Patriot missiles. What matters now is for our partners to make the political decision to provide the necessary packages,” Zelenskyy said, urging allies to deploy available systems rather than leave them unused.
The appeal comes amid reports of limited global supplies of Patriot interceptors, partly due to increased demand arising from the conflict involving Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently indicated that discussions were still ongoing over Ukraine’s request to produce Patriot systems under licence, saying no final decision had been reached.
Overnight, Russia also launched 181 long-range attack drones against Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. It said air defence systems intercepted or jammed 163 drones, although 14 reached their targets and caused damage at 13 locations.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed its forces struck four bulk carriers allegedly transporting military cargo for Ukraine, including three vessels in the Black Sea and another at the port of Mykolaiv. The ministry did not provide further details.
In Russian-occupied Crimea, three people were reportedly killed and two others injured during overnight attacks, according to Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed head of the peninsula.
Separately, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck another warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, continuing a campaign that has targeted several of the company’s distribution centres. The latest attack triggered a fire at a warehouse in Russia’s Vladimir region, where regional authorities said three people were injured.
