The Rivers State House of Assembly has unanimously approved the proposed constitutional amendment seeking the establishment of State Police Services across Nigeria.
The lawmakers endorsed the proposal during plenary presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule following its transmission by the National Assembly as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
The bill seeks to create a constitutional framework for state police formations while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as a federal institution.
Amaewhule reminded members that under Section 9 of the constitution, the amendment would require approval by at least 24 state legislatures before proceeding further.
All 25 lawmakers present voted in favour of the proposal.
The endorsement is considered a significant boost to the push for decentralised policing and aligns with President Tinubu’s advocacy for constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots security.
