Political Strategist Says Atiku Obi Coalition Faces Leadership and Support Base Obstacles

Political strategist Umar Ardo has argued that a possible presidential coalition involving Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi faces significant obstacles over who would step aside and whether either candidate could transfer his political support to the other.

Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, said Atiku, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, was unlikely to voluntarily withdraw from the race.

He suggested that if Atiku did step aside, much of his political base might remain aligned with his decision.

By contrast, Ardo argued that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, might be more willing to withdraw but could have greater difficulty persuading his supporters to follow another candidate.

The assessment represents Ardo’s political analysis and is not a measured finding about voter behavior.

Speaking during a television interview, he said those two factors created a structural problem for efforts to merge the two opposition movements.

Ardo argued that the challenge was not simply reaching an agreement between political leaders but ensuring that supporters accepted any arrangement.

He said a coalition would therefore require both leadership compromise and credible voter mobilization.

Despite those difficulties, Ardo said either candidate could remain competitive individually depending on campaign strategy.

His remarks add to continuing discussion over whether opposition parties and presidential candidates should cooperate ahead of the 2027 election or pursue separate campaigns.

No formal coalition agreement between Atiku and Obi was established in the source material.

The debate is likely to continue as opposition parties weigh the advantages and risks of consolidation against maintaining separate political identities.
