The Nigeria Police Force has mourned the death of 17 police officers killed during a coordinated terrorist assault on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, describing the fallen personnel as courageous and dedicated officers who demonstrated exceptional patriotism through their participation in advanced counter-terrorism training.
Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid said the attack was launched in the early hours of May 8, 2026, at approximately 1:15 a.m., with terrorists storming the facility from multiple directions and engaging in intense confrontation with security personnel. Several Nigerian Army personnel also paid the supreme sacrifice while repelling the attackers.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu conveyed the condolences of the entire force to the families of the deceased and assured them that the sacrifices of the fallen would never be forgotten. The Commissioner of Police for Yobe State visited the institution on behalf of the IG to commiserate with the school commandant, surviving army officers, and police personnel still undergoing training, commending their resilience and urging them to complete the programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
The IG assured Nigerians that the force, working with the armed forces and other security agencies, would sustain efforts to track down and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
