Peter Obi Meets South African Ministers, Calls for Stronger Nigeria-South Africa Cooperation

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has held discussions with senior South African government officials and political leaders over immigration challenges, regional cooperation, and peaceful coexistence between Nigeria and South Africa.

Obi disclosed that the meetings took place in Cape Town following his engagement with Nigerians living in South Africa during his visit for the Spier Dialogue 2026.

Among those he met were Leon Schreiber, a leading figure in the Democratic Alliance; Velenkosini Hlabisa, leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Gayton McKenzie, leader of the Patriotic Alliance.

According to Obi, discussions centred on migration issues, economic pressures, youth unemployment, security concerns, and the growing tensions affecting African migrants in South Africa.

He stressed the need for stronger dialogue and cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, describing both nations as critical to Africa’s stability and development.

“I firmly believe that Nigeria and South Africa, both prominent African nations, must enhance dialogue, bolster cooperation, and seek solutions based on justice, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also called for responsible leadership and restraint amid rising tensions, urging citizens to avoid violence, hate speech, and provocative actions.

He noted that all grievances should be addressed through lawful and democratic institutions rather than through violence or hostility toward foreign nationals.

Obi further emphasised that Africa’s progress depends on unity, economic inclusion, investment in communities, and the protection of the dignity and rights of Africans regardless of where they reside on the continent.

The meetings come amid renewed concerns over xenophobic tensions and the treatment of African migrants in parts of South Africa.
