Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft by United Nigeria Airlines, commending the airline for naming the planes after two distinguished Nigerian figures — the late literary icon Professor Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Lagos, Otti described the gesture as a fitting tribute to individuals whose contributions have left a lasting impact on Nigeria and the global community.
The governor praised the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, for recognising and immortalising personalities who have demonstrated excellence and service to humanity.
According to Otti, celebrating such achievements serves as an inspiration to younger generations and helps strengthen Nigeria’s collective identity and values.
He noted that the acquisition of the aircraft reflects growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry and underscores the resilience and capacity of indigenous businesses to thrive despite economic challenges.
Otti also commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his efforts in driving reforms aimed at improving the operating environment for local airlines and encouraging greater private-sector participation in the sector.
The governor welcomed initiatives designed to support domestic carriers, including aircraft leasing arrangements, which he said would improve access to aviation assets, boost competitiveness, and promote sustainable growth across the industry.
He further expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s support for the ongoing Abia Airport project, revealing that construction work on the runway has reached an advanced stage.
Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the airport project, describing it as a strategic infrastructure development that will enhance connectivity, stimulate economic activities, attract investments, and position Abia State as a key commercial hub.
Congratulating United Nigeria Airlines on the milestone, the governor expressed confidence that the airline would continue to play a significant role in national development through job creation and the expansion of air transport services across the country.
He also congratulated Professor Obiora Okonkwo, the airline’s management team, and other stakeholders involved in the acquisition, praising their vision and dedication in achieving the landmark expansion.
