Okonkwo Warns Obi Cannot Defeat Tinubu without Broader Opposition Coalition

Political commentator Kenneth Okonkwo has argued that Peter Obi would struggle to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election without a broad opposition coalition.

Okonkwo said opposition parties needed to consolidate support behind a stronger common platform rather than enter the election with multiple major candidates.

His comments came amid continuing discussions around a possible Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso political partnership and wider efforts by opposition figures to build a common front.

Okonkwo said neither Obi nor other opposition contenders were likely to have sufficient strength individually to overcome an incumbent president.

He was particularly skeptical about Obi’s prospects in Kano and questioned how much additional electoral value Kwankwaso would bring to a joint ticket.

Those assessments are political opinions rather than established electoral outcomes.

Okonkwo argued that the 2023 election illustrated the cost of opposition fragmentation.

Tinubu won with more than eight million votes, while Atiku Abubakar and Obi each received more than six million.

Simply combining those totals does not establish how voters would behave under a single ticket, but opposition strategists have repeatedly cited the figures to argue for cooperation.

The political landscape has since become more complicated.

Obi and Kwankwaso are now associated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while Atiku is the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate.

The G100 Opposition Coalition has continued to promote negotiations among parties and political leaders in search of a single or coordinated challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The ADC has maintained that it can defeat Tinubu independently while still participating in cooperation talks.

Okonkwo said the central question for the opposition was whether leading contenders could subordinate personal ambitions to a wider electoral strategy.

His intervention adds to growing debate over whether opposition unity is essential to a competitive 2027 presidential contest.
