Okonjo-Iweala Holds BRICS Sideline Meetings with Indian Trade Officials

World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has held productive meetings with India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Okonjo-Iweala said the discussions focused on ongoing WTO negotiating issues, including plurilateral agreements and reforms aimed at strengthening the global trading system.

In a statement following the meetings, the WTO Director-General said there was good progress in following up on key negotiating files and discussions on reforming the organisation.

She welcomed India’s commitment to actively participate in the reform process, particularly initiatives aimed at advancing the WTO and making the multilateral trading system more effective.

“Refreshing to hear the commitment to active involvement in the reforms, including in ways that move the WTO forward,” Okonjo-Iweala said.

The meetings took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Delhi, where global economic cooperation, trade and institutional reforms remain key areas of discussion.
