Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge will be fully opened to the public before the end of the month, ending an extended closure period following the bridge’s inauguration by President Bola Tinubu in April, as the state government awaited the installation of a 30-metre structural feature that it described as an iconic landmark for the bridge.
Speaking during an interactive session with media executives in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said the feature was being installed by Julius Berger, the company that built the bridge, and that a delay in importing the structure had pushed back the opening date. He said installation would begin the following week and that the government had deliberately held back full public access rather than open the bridge and then disrupt traffic again for the installation work.
He described the feature as something motorists and residents would love, characterizing it as a landmark element rising 30 meters from the base that would enhance the aesthetic appeal of the bridge and help it stand out as a recognizable infrastructure symbol in the metropolis.
The Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge is one of the flagship projects of the Lagos State Government aimed at improving connectivity between key parts of the city, reducing travel times, and easing congestion on some of the busiest road corridors in the state.
At the same session, Sanwo-Olu formally introduced his Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who had recently emerged as the 2027 APC governorship candidate, describing their more than two-decade partnership as one that began when both served in President Tinubu’s cabinet as Lagos State Governor. Hamzat said he understood the strategic importance of Lagos not only to Nigeria but to the global Black community, and pledged to deepen the existing development agenda if elected governor.
