Obi Mourns Retired General’s Death, Raises Alarm Over Worsening Insecurity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria following the reported death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in kidnappers’ captivity and renewed attacks by bandits in parts of the country.

In a statement on Saturday, Obi described the death of the retired military officer as a national tragedy, lamenting that a man who dedicated much of his life to defending the country ultimately fell victim to criminal elements.

The former Anambra State governor said he received with shock and sadness reports of the retired general’s death, as well as fresh incidents of banditry and terrorism in Sokoto and Kwara states.

According to him, armed bandits reportedly blocked a market route in Sokoto State and abducted traders, while terrorists attacked communities in Kwara State, resulting in kidnappings and loss of lives.

Obi said the incidents highlighted the growing security challenges facing the country and underscored the urgent need for decisive action.

He noted that the death of Major General Abubakar, who served Nigeria with distinction and rose through the ranks of the Armed Forces before retirement, was a painful reminder of the extent of insecurity across the nation.

Describing the situation as a grave security emergency, Obi said the continued attacks on citizens, communities, and economic activities indicate that insecurity is expanding in scope and intensity.

“When traders can no longer travel safely to markets, farmers cannot access their farms, communities live under constant fear, and even retired senior military officers are not spared from kidnapping and violent crime, it becomes evident that the nation is facing a serious security crisis,” he said.

The former presidential candidate urged the Federal Government and security agencies to adopt a more proactive and coordinated approach to addressing insecurity, emphasizing the need for intelligence-driven operations, improved border security, modern technology, and enhanced support for security personnel.

He stressed that security remains the primary responsibility of government, warning that a nation where citizens live in fear and economic activities are constantly disrupted cannot achieve sustainable growth, attract investment, or create jobs.

Obi called for intensified efforts to reclaim all territories affected by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities, insisting that perpetrators must be apprehended and brought to justice.

He also extended condolences to the family of the late Major General Abubakar, his former colleagues in the military, and families of other victims of insecurity across the country.

The former governor sympathised with those affected by the recent attacks in Sokoto, Kwara, and other parts of Nigeria, while reiterating his call for urgent reforms to strengthen national security and protect citizens.

Obi added that the recurring security challenges further underscored the need for a safer and more secure Nigeria where citizens can live, work, travel, and conduct legitimate business without fear.
