Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi secured the party’s ticket following the NDC presidential primary, placing him at the center of the opposition’s renewed push to challenge the ruling party in the next election cycle.
Following his emergence, Obi also named former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya Movement leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate, setting up a high profile Obi Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the 2027 polls.
The choice of Kwankwaso is expected to strengthen the NDC’s national spread, especially in the North West, where the former Kano governor commands a strong political following.
In his acceptance speech after emerging as the party’s candidate, Obi thanked members of the NDC, party leaders, delegates and supporters for what he described as a solemn call to national service.
He said his victory was not a personal triumph, but a responsibility to millions of Nigerians who desire a new direction for the country.
According to him, Nigeria is passing through one of the most difficult periods in its history, with citizens battling hardship, insecurity, unemployment, hunger and loss of confidence in public institutions.
Obi said the 2027 election would give Nigerians another opportunity to choose competence, character, capacity and compassion over failed promises and wasteful governance.
He promised to run a campaign focused on issues, facts and practical solutions rather than insults, division or political bitterness.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate said his administration, if elected, would prioritize security, food production, education, healthcare, job creation, power supply and the rebuilding of public trust.
He also pledged to move Nigeria from a consumption driven economy to a productive one, saying the country must invest in agriculture, manufacturing, technology, small businesses and human capital development.
Obi assured young Nigerians that they would not be treated as spectators in the nation’s future, but as active participants in rebuilding the country.
He said women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, students and vulnerable citizens would be central to his policy agenda.
The NDC candidate also appealed to other aspirants and party members to unite behind the party, stressing that the primary was over and the larger task ahead was to rescue the country through democratic means.
He said the NDC must now move into communities, towns, markets, campuses and workplaces to engage Nigerians directly and present a clear plan for national recovery.
Obi’s emergence is expected to reshape the 2027 presidential contest, especially among voters seeking an alternative political platform anchored on accountability, economic reform and competent leadership.
Party leaders said his candidacy reflects the NDC’s determination to offer Nigerians a credible choice at a time of deep economic concerns, insecurity and growing public demand for responsive leadership.
They said the party would now focus on reconciliation, mobilization and grassroots engagement across the country to build momentum ahead of the elections.
Supporters of Obi described his victory as a major boost for citizens who believe Nigeria needs a leadership model driven by discipline, transparency and measurable results.
They also said his candidacy is likely to appeal to young voters, professionals and Nigerians dissatisfied with the current state of the country.
With the ticket now secured, attention is expected to shift to Obi’s campaign structure, policy agenda and the formal rollout of the NDC’s nationwide campaign.
Political analysts believe the Obi Kwankwaso ticket could give the NDC a stronger national appeal, but the party will still face the challenge of expanding its structure and translating popularity into votes across the country.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to be a major test for Nigeria’s opposition parties as they seek to build a united front and present voters with a strong alternative.
For the NDC, Obi’s emergence and Kwankwaso’s selection as running mate mark a defining moment as the party prepares for what could become one of the most closely watched presidential contests in Nigeria’s recent political history.
