The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has begun investigating a runway excursion involving an Enugu Air Embraer E170 aircraft at Benin Airport, after the plane overran the end of the runway during landing.

The bureau said the aircraft, operating as Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin with 63 passengers and five crew members on board, overran Runway 05 at about 3:10 pm local time, but confirmed all passengers and crew were accounted for with no injuries reported. Its investigation team was mobilized to the site within minutes of notification and is gathering evidence, interviewing the flight crew, examining the aircraft and assessing runway conditions to determine what caused the incident.

Bureau Director General Alex Badeh Jr said the agency was relieved no injuries occurred but stressed that every runway excursion warrants a thorough independent investigation, urging the public to avoid speculation while the inquiry proceeds. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with a final report including safety recommendations to follow once the investigation concludes.

Enugu Air confirmed the incident in a statement, saying all passengers and crew safely disembarked without injury and that the aircraft had been secured while aviation authorities were notified, adding that some flight schedules may see temporary adjustments as a result. An eyewitness described panic among passengers and airport officials at the time of the incident, though video obtained afterward showed passengers calmly disembarking under the supervision of airport staff. Industry observers noted that heavy rainfall preceding such incidents can cause hydroplaning, where standing water prevents tires from gripping the runway, and pointed to a similar Air Peace runway excursion at Port Harcourt Airport in 2025 that also resulted in no injuries.
