NSE, AGESI Sign Agreement to Build Climate-Resilient Engineering Skills

The Ibeju-Lekki Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers has entered a partnership with the Africa Green Economy and Sustainability Institute to improve the ability of engineers and infrastructure professionals to respond to flooding, climate risk and environmental damage.

The memorandum of understanding, announced in Lagos on October 14, 2026, creates a framework for professional training, research, adaptation planning and collaboration with regulators, planners and infrastructure operators.

A central feature is the Catchment Resilience Engineering Certification programme, which the organizations intend to develop as a structured learning pathway. Proposed training includes flood and catchment risk, climate governance, engineering design, resilience mapping and assessment of loss and damage.

NSE branch chairman Olufemi Dare said engineers needed stronger evidence-based tools to address climate pressures and infrastructure vulnerability. He presented the agreement as a way to strengthen professional standards while protecting communities.

The organizations plan masterclasses, modular training, resilience clinics, community adaptation tools and research programmes. Their proposals also reference FIPRE methods and Source-Pathway-Receptor analysis, alongside recognized sustainability reporting and climate-risk frameworks.

AGESI Executive Director Eugene Itua said the partnership was intended to scale practical capacity across engineering, planning and community preparedness. The organizations also envision professional credentials covering resilience engineering and climate-risk governance.

The effectiveness of the agreement will depend on the quality of training, adoption by employers and public agencies, and measurable improvements in infrastructure planning. The memorandum establishes intentions and cooperation mechanisms; it does not by itself demonstrate that flood risks have been reduced.
