NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf Wushishi Dies Eight Months After Assuming Office

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died at the age of 56, about eight months after assuming office.

Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, with news of his death reaching Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

His death has reportedly thrown his family, associates and political circles into mourning.

Wushishi, a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was said to have taken ill shortly before his death.

A close associate confirmed the development, expressing shock over the sudden loss.

“Aminu is dead. I am saddened and not in a good mood now,” the associate said.

Sources close to the family and a senior presidential source also confirmed the death, although details surrounding the circumstances of his passing were not immediately available.

Wushishi assumed leadership of the NPC earlier this year and had been overseeing the commission’s mandate on population data and demographic planning before his death.

His sudden passing is expected to trigger reactions across Niger State and the national political and administrative circles.
