Northern Stakeholders Back Obi’s One-Term Presidency Proposal

A growing number of political stakeholders in Northern Nigeria have thrown their weight behind Nigeria Democratic Congress Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his renewed pledge to serve only a single term if elected president in 2027.

Supporters of the former Anambra State governor described the proposal as a bold and practical step toward fostering national unity, political inclusion, and stability in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.

According to Obi’s northern supporters, the one-term commitment demonstrates a willingness to place national interest above personal political ambition, particularly amid ongoing debates over power rotation and equitable representation among the country’s regions.

They argue that the proposal could serve as a confidence-building measure by reassuring various political blocs that leadership transitions would remain predictable and inclusive. The arrangement, they say, has the potential to strengthen national consensus and address concerns about political balance between the North and the South.

Many of Obi’s backers have also praised the pledge as a rare example of political compromise in a country where electoral contests are often fiercely competitive.

Speaking on the issue, Ibrahim Hussaini Abdulkarin said public scepticism toward politicians is understandable but cautioned against assuming that all political promises are destined to be broken.

According to him, Obi’s reputation for prudence, consistency, and accountability in public service distinguishes him from many contemporary political figures and gives supporters confidence that he would honour the commitment if elected.

The proposal is also reportedly gaining traction within sections of the Kwankwasiyya movement, where some members view it as a potential foundation for a broader political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Supporters believe that a strategic understanding between Obi and influential northern political leaders could help strengthen national cohesion and promote smoother leadership transitions through consensus-building rather than political confrontation.

For many of them, the one-term pledge represents more than an electoral promise. They see it as part of a broader vision for inclusive governance and national reconciliation.

Dr. Muhammad Hamisu, Kano State Coordinator of Kwankwasiyya Diaspora, said many northerners regard Obi as a credible and trustworthy leader capable of fulfilling his commitment.

He noted that confidence in Obi stems from a belief that leadership founded on justice, fairness, inclusion, and accountability offers the most effective pathway to national development and prosperity.

Supporters further argue that the significance of the one-term proposal extends beyond the issue of tenure, portraying it as a symbol of political accommodation and bridge-building across regional divides.

They expressed optimism that the initiative could contribute to a more inclusive political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly if it secures the support of key northern leaders who share the vision of a more united and equitable Nigeria.
