The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the appointment of Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman, while warning of what it described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democratic system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed’s emergence follows the resignation of former acting national chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, who, according to the party, recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The development marks a significant leadership transition as the NNPP intensifies preparations for the next electoral cycle.
In a statement issued on Sunday, National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson described the new chairman as an experienced political strategist with deep roots in party organisation. He noted that Mohammed, a former national organising secretary of the NNPP from Kaduna State, brings administrative competence and grassroots appeal to the role.
Johnson said the leadership change was both timely and strategic, given the evolving political landscape and the need to reposition the party for greater national relevance.
Beyond the leadership announcement, the NNPP used the opportunity to express concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that recent developments could undermine democratic institutions if not addressed.
The party alleged that there are increasing attempts to destabilise opposition platforms through internal disruptions and legal challenges, which it described as part of a broader pattern of democratic erosion.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” the statement said, citing what it called sponsored crises within political parties, misuse of legal processes, and a shrinking democratic space.
The NNPP also pointed to prevailing economic and security challenges across the country, including rising inflation and insecurity, as factors contributing to what it termed a “perilous moment” for the nation.
According to the party, Mohammed’s appointment is expected to strengthen internal cohesion, rebuild party structures, and enhance its readiness to compete effectively in future elections.
It added that the new chairman has been tasked with unifying party members, expanding its support base, and presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians seeking improved governance.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the NNPP said it remains focused on promoting accountability, transparency, and inclusive governance, while positioning itself as a viable platform for national development.
“Our democracy is under strain, but the NNPP remains committed to protecting the will of the people and offering a pathway to better governance,” the party stated.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, the NNPP’s leadership reshuffle and its strong remarks on the state of democracy are expected to shape conversations within opposition circles and the broader political landscape.
