The Nigerian Navy has marked the 70th anniversary of its establishment with the inauguration of three infrastructure projects at its Bayelsa facility and an educational outreach to a riverine community in Delta State, combining institutional development with civil-military engagement as part of a week of anniversary activities.
At NNS Soroh in Bayelsa, the Central Naval Command unveiled a newly constructed Ratings Mess, a remodeled Administrative Block Extension, and a new Administrative Block. Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff, said the projects reflected the service’s consistent investment in the welfare and working conditions of its personnel, noting that every such investment across the Navy’s seven decades had directly produced better security outcomes on Nigeria’s waterways.
Rear Admiral Suleiman Ibrahim, representing the Chief of Naval Staff at the commemoration event, emphasized the crucial role of the projects in translating the Command’s vision into tangible outcomes. Commodore Christian Akokota, Commanding Officer of NNS Soroh, expressed the symbolic importance of the projects for the officers and ratings of the ship.
In Delta State, the Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Escravos took a team to the Aruton community in Ugborodo, distributing school bags and books to pupils at Ikpere Primary School. Navy Captain Arinzechukwu Kenneth Egwuatuonwu, Commanding Officer of FOB Escravos, said the outreach was designed to deepen the relationship between the Navy and its host communities and to invest in the future of Nigerian children. He said the school was selected in recognition of the community’s consistent support for the base’s operations.
