Nigerian and South African Navies Forge Maritime Security Alliance in Cape Town

The Nigerian Navy and its South African counterpart have taken a significant step toward deepening continental maritime security cooperation through inaugural Naval Staff Talks held at Naval Base Simon’s Town in Cape Town, South Africa, establishing a structured framework for joint action against shared maritime threats.

Director of Naval Information Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho confirmed that the Nigerian delegation was led by Rear Admiral A.A. Mustapha, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, while Rear Admiral S. Makhanya headed the South African side. The talks were endorsed by Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of the Nigerian Naval Staff, and his counterpart Vice Admiral Monde Lobese.

Discussions covered maritime domain awareness, joint training, operational cooperation, and capacity building, with the shared aim of addressing threats including piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational crime across African waters. The Nigerian delegation also toured the Institute of Maritime Technology and the South African Naval Museum, gaining insights into local innovations and maritime heritage.

The South African Navy is expected to join Nigeria’s 70th Anniversary celebrations in June 2026, providing a further opportunity to formalise agreements and deepen collaboration between the two navies.

In a separate operation, personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft rescued three suspected stowaways from the merchant vessel MSC Stella off the Lagos Fairway Buoy. Acting on intelligence from the Western Regional Control Centre, a Quick Response Team deployed from Tarkwa Bay and intercepted the vessel five nautical miles offshore. The suspects, identified as Aguru Michael from Benin Republic, Soye Monday from Ondo State, and Kentobou Peter from Delta State, had boarded the vessel illegally at Tin Can Island Port with the apparent intention of reaching Europe. They are currently in Navy custody pending investigation.
