Nigeria Declares August 25 Public Holiday for Eid ul Mawlid Celebration

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the Islamic celebration marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The announcement was made on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the minister extended warm greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging citizens to reflect on the values exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad.

According to Tunji-Ojo, Eid ul Mawlid presents an opportunity for Nigerians to embrace virtues such as compassion, humility, and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”

The minister also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace, unity, and stability in the country, stressing that national cohesion remains a collective responsibility.

He urged citizens to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding regardless of religious, ethnic, or other differences.

Tunji-Ojo further encouraged Muslims and other Nigerians to celebrate the occasion with restraint, respect for one another, and a renewed commitment to peace and harmony.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while working to sustain peace and security across the country.

The public holiday will enable Muslims nationwide to observe Eid ul Mawlid, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, commemorating the birth and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The minister wished the Muslim faithful a joyous, peaceful, and fulfilling Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
