Nigeria and UK Agree New Cooperation on Visa Fraud, Migration and Cross-Border Crime

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed to deepen cooperation on migration management, justice and security, including action against visa fraud, organized immigration crime, drug trafficking and cyber-enabled offenses.

The commitments emerged from the annual UK-Nigeria Migration, Justice and Home Affairs Dialogue held in London on October 6, following discussions linked to President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Britain in March.

The agenda includes better document verification, border management, extradition, asset recovery, prisoner transfers and arrangements for safe and dignified returns and reintegration. Both sides also discussed visa pathways that could support legitimate business investment in Nigeria.

British Deputy High Commissioner Vicky Seymour said the partnership aimed to protect lawful travelers while addressing abuses of migration systems. Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, stressed that enforcement should be balanced with credible opportunities for legal movement.

The British government identified Nigeria as a major source of student and work visa applicants, underlining the importance of maintaining trusted travel routes between the countries.

Officials agreed to track implementation of the commitments, with Nigeria expected to host the next dialogue in 2027. The measures announced represent areas of cooperation; their effectiveness will depend on subsequent execution by the relevant authorities.
