Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has said negative public perceptions of the military and other security agencies are discouraging many young Nigerians from pursuing careers in the armed forces.
Soludo made the observation during a memorial service held in honour of the late Lt. Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor (rtd.) at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka over the weekend.
The governor said distinguished military officers such as Obiakor should serve as role models capable of inspiring younger generations to embrace national service.
He described the late general as an illustrious son of Anambra State whose military career and international peacekeeping contributions brought honour to Nigeria.
“We have come to celebrate the life of one of our best,” Soludo said, describing Obiakor as “Anambra’s export to Nigeria and the world.”
The governor however stressed that the most enduring legacy of any individual lies in the positive impact made on their immediate community.
He urged elders and community leaders to maintain close ties with their people and provide moral guidance to younger generations.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by Maj.-Gen. Tariweriye Gagariga, also paid tribute to the deceased, describing him as a decorated veteran whose service brought honour and dignity to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the late general’s son, Nonso Obiakor, reflected on his father’s career, highlighting his discipline, commitment to peacekeeping and dedication to humanity.
The memorial service attracted senior military officers, government officials, family members and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate Obiakor’s contributions to Nigeria and the international community.
