NDPC, National Population Commission Move to Strengthen Data Protection Collaboration

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the National Population Commission (NPC) have agreed to deepen collaboration aimed at strengthening data protection, privacy compliance, and responsible management of personal information across the country.

The development followed a strategic working visit by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, to the headquarters of the National Population Commission in Abuja, where he met with NPC Chairman, Aminu Yusuf, and members of the commission’s management team.

During the visit, Olatunji commended the NPC for its efforts in digitising its operations, noting that the commission serves as the custodian of one of the largest repositories of personal information on Nigerians. He stressed the importance of implementing strong technical and organisational safeguards to protect citizens’ data.

Discussions between both agencies focused on enhancing trust, confidence and credibility in the NPC’s data processing activities through compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.

Olatunji highlighted the benefits of adherence to the data protection law and shared insights into the evolution of privacy and data protection frameworks in Nigeria, as well as practical steps for achieving compliance.

As part of efforts to support the NPC’s compliance journey, the NDPC offered free induction training and 100 Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers to members of the commission’s workforce.

The NDPC boss expressed satisfaction with the response from the NPC leadership, particularly its commitment to strengthening data protection and privacy practices across its nationwide operations, including offices in all 774 local government areas, the 36 states, and the Federal Capital Territory.

To formalise the partnership, both agencies agreed to establish a technical working group tasked with developing actionable plans and facilitating the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The two commissions emphasized that stronger institutional collaboration is essential to building a trusted digital ecosystem where personal data is securely managed and responsibly processed to support national development.
