The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it broke up several trafficking operations over the weekend, headlined by a fuel tanker in Ondo State found to be smuggling more than two tonnes of cannabis, and a shipment at Lagos airport containing nearly a million tramadol tablets worth over ₦1.1 billion.
Per agency spokesperson Femi Babafemi, officers stopped a 20,000-liter tanker (plate MKA 960 XC) on the Akoko–Lokoja Expressway on Friday; the driver fled after abandoning the truck at a church, and a hidden compartment turned up 165 bags of cannabis (2,145 kg). Separately, customs at Murtala Muhammed International Airport intercepted 966,200 tramadol tablets hidden in a shipment of used trousers from Pakistan.
Other hauls included 57.8 kg of potent cannabis disguised in a glove shipment from Singapore (est. ₦173 million), nearly 600 kg of cannabis-infused edibles at Tin Can Port linked to a previous bust, and a 1.2 kg cocaine shipment bound for Riyadh that led to the arrest of a Lagos trader who the agency says has a prior 2011 drug conviction, though that detail has not been verified against court records.
Additional seizures were reported across Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Ekiti, Kogi, Taraba, and Enugu states, including hundreds of thousands of opioid pills, a shipment of cannabis hidden among cement, and a four-hectare cannabis farm destroyed in Ekiti. NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa praised the operations and urged commands to keep up the pressure. All suspects remain innocent until proven otherwise in court.
