National Homeownership Campaign Launched to Expand Affordable Housing Access

Housing stakeholders have launched the National Homeownership and Housing Development Campaign as part of a coordinated effort to improve access to affordable homes and strengthen collaboration across Nigeria’s housing sector.

The initiative was unveiled during the 20th Africa International Housing Show held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

The campaign, developed by the Know This Nigeria Network in collaboration with the Africa International Housing Show, brings together government officials, housing institutions, developers, investors, professional bodies and development partners.

Convener of the housing show, Festus Adebayo, described the campaign as a timely intervention designed to connect Nigerians with housing programmes, mortgage opportunities and financing initiatives that are often poorly understood or inadequately publicized.

Adebayo said that although governments and financial institutions regularly introduce housing programmes, many citizens and state authorities remain unaware of the opportunities available.

He explained that the campaign would take housing discussions directly to states and communities while encouraging partnerships among governments, developers, financial institutions and development organizations.

The programme will be implemented across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Participating states will be able to showcase housing projects, attract investments, engage financial institutions and expose residents to new homeownership and construction solutions.

Adebayo said the campaign was expected to begin in Kano State in September before moving to states in southern Nigeria.

National Coordinator of the campaign, Mohammed Baba Adamu, said the initiative would help close the gap between federal housing policies and implementation at the state and community levels.

He said housing should no longer remain a subject discussed only at conferences or contained in policy documents.

“Our objective is to create platforms where governments, institutions, developers, investors and citizens can engage one another, build partnerships and unlock opportunities that will accelerate affordable housing delivery across Nigeria,” Adamu said.

The organizers explained that the campaign would encourage collaboration, stimulate investment, promote innovation and increase public awareness of mortgage and housing finance opportunities.

State level engagements will also enable citizens to interact directly with housing institutions and developers while receiving information on available programmes and eligibility requirements.
