The Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Kamoru Ogunlana, has disclosed that the National Assembly has more than 14,000 workers, in addition to the 469 federal lawmakers and thousands of visitors who access the complex daily.
Ogunlana made the disclosure on Tuesday while speaking at the final phase of a capacity-building training programme for legislative aides serving in the 10th National Assembly.
According to him, the size of the workforce, coupled with the number of lawmakers and visitors who frequent the National Assembly complex, makes the Nigerian parliament one of the busiest legislative institutions in the world.
He said the large number of personnel and daily visitors underscores the need for continuous capacity development and improved efficiency among legislative staff and aides.
Ogunlana stressed the importance of equipping legislative aides with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively support lawmakers in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
He noted that legislative aides play a critical role in supporting members of the National Assembly through research, policy analysis, constituency engagement and other functions essential to effective lawmaking.
The clerk said training programmes such as the one being concluded would help strengthen the capacity of legislative aides and ultimately contribute to improved legislative performance.
The National Assembly comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives, with 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives, bringing the total number of federal lawmakers to 469.
