NAFDAC Hosts Boston Consulting Group Team to Assess Regulatory Financing Model

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has hosted a team from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) at its corporate headquarters in Abuja as part of an assessment of sustainable financing models for African national regulatory authorities.

The study was commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to examine sustainable revenue and fee models that can support the evolving mandates and regulatory responsibilities of National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) across Africa.

During an opening meeting with NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, discussions focused on the agency’s existing revenue structure, cost base, regulatory activities and fee model.

The engagement also examined NAFDAC’s future financial requirements and priorities as the agency expands its regulatory responsibilities.

The four-day assessment will feature technical sessions with officials from various NAFDAC directorates and units, including finance, registration, inspectorate, post-market surveillance, laboratories, ports and border operations, human resources, information technology, digital services and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Other areas of regulatory operations will also be reviewed as part of the comprehensive assessment.

The study is expected to provide insights into forward-looking financial sustainability strategies for regulatory agencies, with NAFDAC set to receive a tailored assessment of its revenue, operational costs and fee structure.

The initiative is aimed at supporting the development of sustainable financing mechanisms capable of strengthening regulatory capacity and enabling national regulatory authorities to effectively meet their expanding mandates.
