Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged young Nigerians to treat digital content creation as a tool for civic engagement and nation building, speaking at a forum for bloggers, online publishers and content developers in Abuja.
Idris said digital platforms offer significant opportunities for income and innovation but must be used responsibly to promote truth, national unity and constructive public discourse, urging young content creators to embrace ethical journalism and fact based reporting as they help shape public opinion. He said no democracy can thrive without a responsible media, and that freedom must be matched with responsibility, adding that the Tinubu administration remains committed to protecting press freedom.
He urged bloggers to verify information before publishing, reject misinformation, avoid sensationalism and use their platforms to educate and promote national development. He also highlighted the establishment of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute, the first UNESCO category two institute dedicated solely to media and information literacy, describing it as a major step toward promoting responsible online engagement, and encouraged aspiring content creators to continue building their skills and professional standards to strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s online media ecosystem.
