Arsenal climbed to the summit of the Premier League table after Kai Havertz’s first-half strike secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The decisive moment came early in the contest when Declan Rice surged into the penalty area before delivering a precise cut-back for Havertz, who converted from close range at the back post.
Liverpool responded strongly after falling behind and believed they had a case for a penalty before halftime when Jurriën Timber appeared to pull Alexander Isak’s shirt inside the area. However, officials dismissed the appeals, allowing play to continue.
Despite enjoying spells of possession and pressure, the hosts struggled to break down Arsenal’s well-organized defence in a tense second half. Chances were limited as the visitors remained disciplined and compact, frustrating Liverpool’s attacking stars throughout the encounter.
Rio Ngumoha came close to rescuing a point in stoppage time but dragged his effort wide, allowing Arsenal to see out the victory and move above Manchester City in the standings.
The result ended Arsenal’s long wait for a league victory at Anfield, their first since September 2012 when Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla were on the scoresheet with current manager Mikel Arteta featuring as a midfielder.
Having previously failed to win in six Premier League visits to Anfield under Arteta, Arsenal finally overcame one of their toughest away fixtures with a resilient display. Gabriel and Ezri Konsa led a disciplined defensive unit that largely nullified Liverpool’s attack, while goalkeeper David Raya was rarely called into action.
Declan Rice once again delivered an influential performance in midfield, combining defensive solidity with attacking intent and providing the assist for the match-winning goal.
For Liverpool, the defeat was a frustrating one despite encouraging spells of play from Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo in support of Isak. The hosts enjoyed attacking opportunities but repeatedly found Arsenal’s defence standing firm.
Remarkably, Liverpool finished the match without registering a single shot on target. Although their expected goals tally was higher than Arsenal’s, the Reds lacked the cutting edge needed to convert possession and territory into meaningful chances.
The victory strengthens Arsenal’s title credentials, with the Gunners demonstrating the defensive resilience and composure required to triumph in one of the Premier League’s most demanding venues.
