Nigeria Democratic Congress vice presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has described the 2027 general election as a struggle over the future direction of the country and urged supporters to intensify grassroots mobilization.
Kwankwaso reportedly made the remarks during a meeting with South East leaders of the Kwankwaso National Network at his Abuja residence.
The account was provided by the group’s South East coordinator, Ukpai Iro Ukpai.
According to Ukpai, Kwankwaso argued that growing dissatisfaction over insecurity, infrastructure, electricity, education and agriculture had increased demand for political change.
He said the election should not be viewed simply as a competition between parties but as a broader choice about governance.
Kwankwaso reportedly urged supporters to resist vote buying and electoral manipulation and to participate peacefully in defending lawful electoral outcomes.
He cited the recent Osun governorship election as evidence, in his view, that votes could count where citizens and institutions remained committed to the process.
The South East delegation said it would work toward delivering five million votes for the Obi Kwankwaso ticket across the region.
That target represents the group’s political ambition rather than an independently established projection.
Ukpai said the delegation briefed Kwankwaso on its structures, mobilization work and challenges across the South East.
Kwankwaso also reportedly referred to historical political cooperation between northern and South East leaders, including the Second Republic partnership between Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme.
He described the NDC as a major opposition platform and expressed confidence in the alliance’s growth.
The former Kano State governor also said education would receive strong attention under an Obi Kwankwaso administration.
The comments form part of the NDC’s effort to build a cross regional coalition ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.
