Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Ignatius Kaigama has urged Nigerians to reject hatred and revenge and embrace forgiveness, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
The message was delivered on his behalf by Richard Igyor during the 2026 National Feast Celebration of the Pious Union of Saint Rita of Cascia in Abuja.
More than 1,000 devotees attended the event, which focused on peace, faith and hope.
Igyor said the virtues associated with Saint Rita, including forgiveness, perseverance and commitment to peace, remained relevant to Nigeria’s current social and political challenges.
He encouraged Christians to demonstrate their faith through their treatment of others rather than limiting religious devotion to requests for miracles or personal favours.
Speakers at the event said peaceful conduct in homes, workplaces, communities and public institutions could contribute to national development.
Pious Union leader Cecilia Oyakhire described women as important builders of families and communities and urged them to promote peace and strong moral values.
Former Auditor General of the Federation Ukura Samuel also called on political leaders to embrace fairness, forgiveness and selfless service.
Organisers said the union continued to support vulnerable people through charitable activities, including visits to hospitals and assistance with medical expenses.
Participants were encouraged to reject hostility and resolve disagreements through tolerance, dialogue and reconciliation.
