An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza Strip has killed five Palestinians, including three children, amid continued hostilities despite a standing ceasefire.
Local medics and civil defence officials said the victims were struck while gathered near a mosque in Beit Lahiya on Wednesday. The area has witnessed repeated attacks in recent days, raising concerns over escalating violence.
Reports indicate a surge in airstrikes across the enclave, with officials alleging repeated violations of the ceasefire that took effect in October. Hundreds of Palestinians have reportedly been killed since the truce began, including women, children, and elderly residents.
Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, more than 72,000 Palestinians are said to have died in Israeli military operations, according to figures from local authorities.
Reacting to the latest developments, Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the continued violence, describing it as part of an “unrelenting pattern of killings.”
He noted that civilians continue to be killed or injured in homes, shelters, and public spaces, including areas housing displaced families, as well as medical and educational facilities.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with humanitarian agencies warning of worsening conditions as access to essential aid and services continues to be severely restricted.
