Israel Intensifies West Bank Military Operation Ahead of Election

The Israeli military on Sunday continued a major operation in the occupied West Bank, displacing hundreds of Palestinians and imposing sweeping movement restrictions following a gun attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others.

The operation is concentrated in Hebron, the city where Friday’s attack occurred, as Israel approaches a closely watched election scheduled for Tuesday.

The election is widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership and his handling of security during three years of war.

As part of the latest restrictions, the Israeli military said most Palestinian workers holding permits would be barred from entering Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Sunday and Monday.

Crossings into Israel will also remain closed until after Tuesday’s election, according to the military.

The military said its forces had operated in more than 400 locations across the weekend and arrested 40 Palestinians it alleged were affiliated with Hamas or Islamic Jihad.

However, no militant group has claimed responsibility for Friday’s gun attack.

The operation and restrictions have added to the disruption facing Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, with hundreds reportedly displaced as Israeli forces continue their activities.

The developments come amid heightened security concerns ahead of the Israeli election, in which Netanyahu’s record on national security is expected to be a major issue.
