Heineken Appoints Rafael Oliveira as New CEO Following Surprise Exit of Predecessor

Dutch brewing giant Heineken has appointed Rafael Oliveira as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the unexpected departure of former CEO Dolf van den Brink earlier this year.

The company announced on Tuesday that Oliveira, who previously held a senior leadership role at coffee and tea company JDE Peet’s, has been nominated to lead the brewer. His appointment remains subject to shareholder approval.

Oliveira takes over at a challenging time for Heineken, which has been grappling with declining beer sales and a difficult economic environment. The company reported a nearly one per cent drop in beer sales during the first quarter of the year, attributing the decline to an increasingly complex market landscape and rising energy costs.

Van den Brink stepped down in January after six years at the helm, a move that surprised many within the company. His tenure was marked by a mix of achievements and challenges, with Heineken describing its recent performance as mixed amid shifting consumer trends and economic pressures.

Announcing the appointment, Supervisory Board Chairman Peter Wennink expressed confidence in Oliveira’s ability to steer the company through its next phase of growth.

“With Rafa at the helm, we look forward to building on Heineken’s strong foundations and continuing our journey of long-term, balanced growth,” Wennink said in a statement.

Heineken has also embarked on cost-cutting measures to improve efficiency, announcing plans in February to reduce its workforce by up to 6,000 jobs worldwide.

Speaking on his appointment, Oliveira said he was committed to strengthening the company’s position in the global beverage market.

“I am confident we will accelerate growth, drive productivity and future-fit Heineken, winning the hearts of consumers worldwide,” he said.
