Former Nigeria international Michael Eneramo has died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest during a friendly match in Kaduna, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed on Friday. He was 40.
Eneramo reportedly collapsed on the pitch five minutes into the second half of the game and received immediate medical attention, but could not be revived.
Reacting to the incident, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi described the loss as “devastating,” extending condolences to the late striker’s family, friends, and the wider football community.
Eneramo earned 10 caps for Nigeria and was part of the team’s qualification campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he scored in a crucial 2-2 draw against Tunisia.
At club level, he enjoyed a successful career across several countries and leagues. He was particularly celebrated for his time with Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where his physical presence and goal-scoring ability earned him the nickname “The Tank” among fans.
Eneramo also had playing stints in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, building a reputation as a consistent and hardworking striker.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Nigerian football, with tributes expected to pour in from teammates, fans, and officials across the globe.
