Former Kano State Governor and Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, citing a strategic political realignment that signals a return to the ruling All Progressives Congress after years in the opposition camp.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau announced his immediate exit from the party, describing the decision as the product of extensive consultations within his political group.
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today,” he wrote, expressing appreciation to the ward leadership for what he described as good stewardship and wishing them continued guidance in their responsibilities.
While Shekarau did not name his next political destination in the letter, he indicated that his group intended to pursue its political activities under a different party and signaled alignment with Governor Abba Yusuf’s Kano First Agenda. APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda had visited Shekarau at his Kano residence earlier this month, widely interpreted as part of efforts to bring the former governor back into the APC fold.
Governor Yusuf formally welcomed Shekarau’s impending return, describing it as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state. A statement from the governor’s office indicated that a date would soon be fixed, in consultation with the APC national secretariat, for Shekarau’s formal reception into the party. Yusuf expressed confidence that growing unity and strategic alignments were positioning the APC as the most dominant political force in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
