FG Deploys First Electric Buses for Federal Civil Servants

The Federal Government has launched the first phase of a 100 bus electric transport programme designed to provide more affordable commuting options for federal civil servants.

Outgoing Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson Jack said 37 buses had been delivered as the first installment.

She described the initiative as a practical welfare intervention intended to reduce the financial burden of daily travel.

Walson Jack said commuting costs affected punctuality, household finances and productivity across the public service.

She argued that safer and more affordable transport should therefore be viewed as an investment in workforce performance rather than simply a welfare benefit.

The electric buses were developed with support from the National Automotive Design and Development Council.

Minister of State for Industry John Enoh said the project also supported the government’s broader sustainability and industrial policy objectives.

The remaining buses are expected to be deployed in subsequent phases.

Officials said the programme was part of a wider effort to translate public service reforms into practical improvements for workers.

Civil servants were urged to take proper care of the vehicles.

The initiative is also expected to contribute to gradual adoption of electric mobility within government fleets.

Its broader impact will depend on the routes served, operating model, charging infrastructure, maintenance and affordability for workers.
