Federal Government Declares June 12 Public Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the occasion provides an opportunity to honour the sacrifices, courage and resilience of Nigerians who fought for the country’s democratic governance.

According to the minister, Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the nation’s democratic journey and the collective efforts of citizens and leaders in sustaining democratic institutions.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the principles of democracy, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

He also called on Nigerians to use the public holiday as a time for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and to renew their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship.

The minister urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic values and fostering sustainable development across the country.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to commemorate the struggle for democratic rule in Nigeria and to celebrate the nation’s democratic achievements.
