Nigeria’s Falconets produced a commanding performance to defeat England 3-0 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday.
The seven-time African champions took control of the Round of 16 encounter early, with Tosin Rafiu opening the scoring in the eighth minute. The FC Robo Queens midfielder netted her second goal of the tournament to give Nigeria a deserved lead after a bright start.
England pushed for an equaliser and nearly drew level in the 26th minute, but Falconets captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma came to Nigeria’s rescue with a crucial save to deny Princess Ademiluyi.
Uzoma was again the hero eight minutes later when England were awarded a penalty. The Nigerian shot-stopper produced a brilliant save to keep out Rachel Maltby’s spot-kick and preserve her side’s advantage.
The Falconets maintained their composure and took a 1-0 lead into the break, with Uzoma’s heroics proving decisive as England failed to find a breakthrough.
Nigeria strengthened its grip on the contest just two minutes after the restart when Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei doubled the lead in the 47th minute, putting the Falconets firmly in control.
The victory sends Nigeria into the last eight of the competition and keeps alive the Falconets’ quest for a historic U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
With a disciplined defensive display, clinical finishing, and an outstanding performance from captain Uzoma, the Falconets once again demonstrated why they remain one of the strongest teams in women’s youth football.
Nigeria will now turn its attention to the quarter-finals, where the Falconets will be aiming to continue their impressive run and move one step closer to World Cup glory.
