Fagbemi Assures Investors of Stronger Legal Protections, Judicial Reforms

The attorney-general says Nigeria is seeking a more predictable legal environment for domestic and international businesses.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi has assured investors that the federal government is pursuing legal and institutional reforms intended to strengthen the protection of business interests in Nigeria.

Fagbemi gave the assurance at a dinner for the Nigerian delegation attending the International Bar Association’s 2026 conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In a statement issued by his media office, the minister said the Tinubu administration was working to reinforce the rule of law, improve access to justice, modernize court administration and strengthen prosecution and law-enforcement institutions.

He linked those priorities to investor confidence, arguing that businesses needed credible institutions, predictable legal rules and respect for rights to make long-term decisions.

Fagbemi called on Nigerian lawyers and professionals at home and abroad to support efforts to improve the country’s legal and investment climate.

Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo praised the attorney-general’s leadership and urged support for the administration’s reform programme.

Lola Akande, identified at the gathering as Nigeria’s ambassador with responsibilities involving Nordic countries, said confidence in legal institutions mattered to citizens, cross-border businesses and international partners alike. The independence and credibility of those institutions, she stressed, shaped perceptions of whether rights and commercial obligations would be protected.

Senior lawyer Yusuf Ali also commended Fagbemi’s engagement with the Nigerian legal delegation.

The government’s assurances were presented as policy commitments; the statement did not announce a new investor-protection law or specify additional enforcement mechanisms.
