The airport authority says the proposed October 20 shutdown is subject to confirmation and advises passengers to contact airlines before traveling.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced plans to close Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri temporarily for runway repairs, resurfacing and related safety work.
FAAN said the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and last approximately 25 days, although final dates have not yet been confirmed. The authority advised travellers to consult their airlines for schedule changes and alternative arrangements.
Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Henry Agbebire said sections of the runway had deteriorated, with potholes and extensive cracks made worse by recent heavy rainfall.
The planned intervention includes pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing to restore safe operating conditions before the expected rise in passenger traffic during the Christmas travel season.
FAAN said the work would also involve extending the runway to improve the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft as demand grows. It described the proposed upgrade as part of its effort to strengthen operational safety and improve passenger experience.
The authority said it would continue discussions with airlines and other stakeholders and announce confirmed closure and reopening dates when the arrangements are finalized. Until then, the October 20 start date remains provisional.
