Delta Police Recover AK-47, Ammunition as Suspected Kidnapper Dies in Gun Battle

The Delta State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its fight against kidnapping and violent crimes following the death of a suspected kidnapper during a coordinated security operation in the state.

The operation, carried out by operatives of the State Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU) in collaboration with local security volunteers, also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with five rounds of live ammunition.

According to the police, the operation followed intelligence gathered from ongoing investigations into recent kidnapping incidents across the state.

The command disclosed that in the early hours of May 18, 2026, operatives trailed suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate to their hideout within the Ubulu-Okiti forest axis.

Police said the gang is believed to be linked to a series of kidnapping operations in Ubuluku, Ubulu-Okiti, Issele-Uku and neighbouring communities in Delta State.

The statement noted that upon arrival at the hideout, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the operatives, prompting a gun duel.

“The team responded professionally with superior firepower, during which one of the suspected kidnappers sustained serious gunshot injuries, while others escaped into the forest with varying degrees of injuries,” the command stated.

Items recovered from the scene included one AK-47 rifle loaded with five rounds of live ammunition and suspected criminal charms.

The injured suspect was reportedly rushed to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Police authorities said a comprehensive combing operation of the forest and surrounding areas is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons or exhibits.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the bravery and professionalism of the operatives involved in the operation.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven and community-based policing strategies aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the state.

The police command also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information, assuring citizens that efforts were being intensified to improve safety and security across Delta State.
