The South East Electricity Consumers Association has called for compensation of Band A electricity consumers in the zone in line with a directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
SEECA Coordinator Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor made the call in Enugu, saying the region should not be overlooked. NERC recently approved special compensation for eligible Band A customers affected by power interruptions caused by grid generation constraints between February and March 2026.
Okafor warned that some regulators were instead downgrading feeders to lower tariff bands, an approach he criticized. He described NERC’s compensatory model as progressive and consumer oriented, noting that generation shortfalls during the period stemmed from inadequate gas supply and vandalism of critical infrastructure, factors beyond the control of distribution companies. He praised the framework, which provides token credits for prepaid customers and bill adjustments for postpaid customers, and urged the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission and other South East agencies to adopt similar measures. He warned that routine feeder downgrades could create technical and administrative difficulties, stressing that a stable tariff structure with transparent compensation would encourage investment and consumer
