Senator Aishat Dahiru Binani has formally defected from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, with the party’s national leader Senator Seriake Dickson immediately assigning her responsibility for delivering Adamawa State to the NDC in the 2027 general elections, in a dramatic political realignment that further reshapes the country’s fragmented opposition landscape.
The defection, formalised at an official unveiling ceremony in Abuja, came barely nine months after Binani had herself exited the All Progressives Congress for the ADC, marking her second major political shift within less than a year and reinforcing the fluid and rapidly evolving nature of Nigeria’s political realignment ahead of 2027.
Dickson described Binani as one of Nigeria’s most formidable female political figures and announced that the NDC’s leadership structure in Adamawa had been effectively placed in her hands. He expressed confidence in her ability to galvanize support across the state and position the party for victory across all elective contests in 2027.
He used the occasion to appeal to women and young Nigerians to embrace the NDC, arguing that the party was committed to ensuring that women who mobilized electoral support were not subsequently sidelined from governance. “For too long, women have only been remembered during campaigns to sing, dance and mobilize support, only to be sidelined after elections. This party is determined to change that narrative,” he declared.
Dickson disclosed that more prominent political figures were set to join the party in the coming weeks, describing the momentum as building rapidly. Binani, a former senator and 2023 Adamawa State governorship candidate of the APC, cited the NDC’s policy-driven orientation and commitment to internal democracy, transparency, fairness, and equity as her reasons for joining. She noted that many of her supporters had already moved into the party before she made her final decision. “Today, Adamawa boasts one of the highest numbers of registered NDC members, and by the grace of God, we will deliver the state for this party in 2027,” she said.
