Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has reaffirmed plans to fully operationalise the State Youth Development Commission as part of efforts to expand opportunities for young people.
The governor made the commitment during activities marking International Youth Day in Makurdi.
Represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, Alia described young people as partners in development and said they had important roles in innovation, agriculture, technology and job creation.
He urged them to take advantage of skills programmes and economic opportunities provided by the administration.
The governor also encouraged greater participation in agriculture, technology and politics while warning against crime and other social vices.
Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly Alfred Emberga advised youths to resist recruitment as political thugs.
Local government leaders also pledged support for youth focused programmes across the state’s 23 councils.
Benue State Investment and Property Company Managing Director Raymond Asemakaha said skills and knowledge would be critical to the future employability of graduates.
Other speakers encouraged young people to pursue entrepreneurship rather than depend only on government jobs.
Organisers said the state had already involved many youths in government appointments, employment and information technology training.
The event also recognised local government officials, young innovators and students for outstanding contributions.
State officials said the planned commission would provide a more coordinated structure for addressing youth development and participation.
